This week, as part of Operation Too Much, (our undercover mission) the Main Character Playlist is back! (If you missed last week’s post, check out the link below.)
Operation Too Much: An Undercover Mission
In my local Marks and Spencer, amidst a large collection of holiday attire, is a truly fabulous jacket. Displayed on two mannequins, it is a little bit cropped, a little bit square, collarless, and covered in silver sequins. Last week, I saw the jacket being considered by two women simultaneously.
Back in May, while in the throes of writers block, I felt wholly incapable of creating outfit prompts. So instead, I offered up a game. Meant to be played alongside the Main Character playlist, these were the instructions:
Listen to each song and imagine it as the soundtrack to a movie where you are the main character.
Ask yourself: What’s happening? Who are you with? Where are you, and how did you get there? What’s the genre —romance, action, indie drama?
Most importantly: What are you wearing?
The motivation behind this game was personal. I hoped that by envisioning myself as a main character, I might start feeling like one, too. This idea was inspired by my friend, Rachel. On her Instagram account, inspirsession, she wrote of her own experience cultivating main character energy, saying:
“Through my routines, my mental habits, and, yes, my wardrobe, I’m making an effort to unshelve myself this year.”
I’m still in love with her description of “unshelving.” It perfectly expresses the joy of embracing all the parts of ourselves—and our style—that may have once felt like too much.
Rachel contributed two songs to the first playlist, and this time she’s sent us THREE! Her choices, in the list below, are:
“Complicated Girl” by the Bangles
“All American Bitch” by Olivia Rodrigo
“God Help the Girl” by Belle and Sebastian
You can follow Rachel, her inspiring writing, and fab outfits here.
As we continue our undercover work through December, we might feel drained, distracted, overwhelmed, or overstimulated. I hope this second instalment of the Main Character Playlist, more hard-hitting than the first, might provide some encouragement and inspiration.
A few notes about the game:
Each song is intended to represent a different movie, a different story, a different Main Character Energy. The list is not supposed to be the full soundtrack to one movie.
Keep each imaginary movie about you. Don’t imagine yourself as someone else. Someone else wouldn’t have your wardrobe!
I’ve embedded the playlist below, or you can listen to it on Spotify here.
Finally, if this game inspires an outfit for you, please share it with me! I absolutely loved seeing the tags and outfit photos you sent from the first playlist and can’t wait to see what you come up with this time.
Wishing you a rocking week!
Your friend,
Rebecca

While I saw & shared the IG post earlier, I am just getting around to reading the full write up here at the end of my work week, and — 🥹🥰 There’s nothing quite like having your own concepts repeated back to you (through someone who understands them in just the way you’d hoped!) at exactly the time you need them yourself. I’ve made myself quite stressed trying to get everything ready and up to my own crazy standards for the holiday this week, so the invitation to unshelve that joyful, indulgent part of myself once again is much needed. Perhaps this is why I had so much fun trying on outfits to wear for my travels! Your prompts were in my head. 😇🤍
